I just found out that I'll soon be coming into possession of a flute and was wondering if, with previous musical experience although not with wind instruments, it's fairly easy to teach yourself. Are there any lessons for beginners that would be available to totally blind people via DVD, stream, CD, cassette, etc., that I could obtain to help me along? Thanks in advance.
You could try a google search for tips on playing the flute. I've found some real coold drum lessons that way. You might find a few sites with some good information.
There are also videos on youtube. If you learn, teach me! I have a yamaha flute and I so love the sound!
If you're looking for audio courses you could try www.musicfortheblind.com. The guy's name is Bill Brown and he has courses in I believe eleven instruments, one of which is indeed the flute. They're available on cassette, CD or by download. The cassette and CD courses cost 39 dollars while the download only form is 35 bucks. I own his guitar and tin wistle courses and I really like them. He's sighted but after encountering a blind guitar student he decided to share his knowledge with the rest of us. He's incredibly hands on and will go over the various parts of the instrument in tactile terms so you know what's what. Once you get through that you actually start to learn to play the instrument and of course how to play songs. The way that works is that he has a backing track for each song. First he plays along with the backing track, then he goes over the chords and melody depending on what instrument you're working with. Then he usually plays through the song again himself and finally plays just the backing track for you to play along with. In the case of a stringed instrument he also goes through any new chords the song might feature. The same is true with wind instruments. Needless to say I find his courses to be extremely informative and would buy more if I had the associated instruments.
